The agreement granted me the apartment outright, half of all legitimate investments, and ten years of support exceeding my teaching salary.
Travis’s signature deteriorated as he signed.
“You ruined me,” he muttered. “I gave you everything.”
“No,” I replied evenly. “You took everything and expected gratitude.”
At the door, he paused. “You’ll never be anyone without me.”
“I always was,” I said. “You just needed me to forget.”
Sunday dinner at Emma’s felt like oxygen. Laughter, garlic, warmth. Mia stood in front of the mirror preparing for her school dance.
“Aunt Savvy, do I look okay?” she asked.
I fastened my grandmother’s emerald earrings into her ears. “These belonged to your great-grandmother,” I said. “She wore them through hardship and loss. She said they were for brave girls.”
Mia touched them carefully.
“And she taught me something else,” I continued. “Your worth isn’t measured by who chooses you. It’s measured by how you stand when tested.”
Monday morning, I returned to Lincoln Elementary. The parking lot buzzed more than usual.
A banner stretched across my classroom door: Welcome back, Miss Turner.
Twenty-eight small faces lit up as I entered.
“You changed your name back!” Sophia announced proudly. “Mom says that means you’re yourself again.”
“That’s right,” I said, my voice thick.
Michael raised his hand. “Were you sick?”
“A little,” I admitted. “But I’m better now.”
The classroom—messy desks, crooked art projects, laughter—felt more like home than marble ever had.
“All right,” I said, settling into my worn desk chair. “Who wants to tell me what I missed?”
Hands shot up instantly, stories spilling over one another.
This was my life. The real one.
And it had always been enough.
